Bengaluru/Madikeri: Travelling to Kodagu from Bengaluru by ordinary Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) buses has become costlier, with the fare to Virajpet increasing from ₹295 to ₹363 and that to Madikeri rising from ₹303 to ₹373 following the State government’s bus fare hike announced on Wednesday.

The fare details shared by the KSRTC officials to The Kodagu Express shows the ordinary KSRTC bus fare from Bengaluru to Madikeri has increased by ₹70 and the fare to Virajpet by ₹68.

The revised fares, which came into effect on November 5, are part of the increase in ticket prices across all four State-run road transport corporations in Karnataka.

The government has increased fares by an average of 23% on services operated by the KSRTC, North Western Karnataka Road Transport Corporation (NWKRTC) and Kalyana Karnataka Road Transport Corporation (KKRTC). The Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) has witnessed a higher increase of 35%.

The fare revision is expected to add to the travel expenses of passengers commuting between Bengaluru and various destinations across the State, including Kodagu.

Transport Minister Byrathi Suresh attributed the increase to the rising cost of diesel, stating that the Union government had increased diesel prices seven times since May, resulting in a cumulative increase of ₹10.47 a litre.

He said the rising fuel costs had placed considerable financial pressure on the transport corporations, making a fare revision necessary to sustain their operations.

The increase comes amid mounting financial challenges faced by the State-run transport corporations, which have been seeking higher fares to meet operational expenses and outstanding liabilities.
