Virajpet: The Kodava Hockey Academy has appealed to organisers of other family-level sporting tournaments in Kodagu to consider rescheduling their events to avoid clashes with the annual Kodava Hockey Festival.

The Academy said the Kodava Hockey Festival is a prestigious sporting and cultural event that attracts a large number of participants and spectators from across the district and other parts of the country. It also draws members of the Kodava community living abroad.

In this regard, the Academy has requested organisers of Kodava family cricket tournaments, family tug-of-war competitions and the football tournaments to adjust their schedules so that the events do not coincide with the hockey festival.

Academy president Pandanda Bopanna said the appeal was being made to ensure that the different sporting events could be conducted without scheduling conflicts. He added that discussions would be held with the concerned organisers in this regard.

The Kodava Hockey Festival, which began in 1997 through the initiative of Pandanda Kuttappa and his brother Kashi Ponnappa, has grown into one of the largest family-based field hockey tournaments in the world. The inaugural edition was held at Karada with around 60 family teams.

The festival brings together Kodava families through hockey, with members of different generations participating in the tournament.
