Bengaluru: Two distinguished personalities from Kodagu, fashion choreographer and stylist Nadikerianda Prasad Bidapa and former Indian hockey player Dr A.B. Subbaiah, were among the recipients of the 2026 Karnataka Rajyotsava Award, presented by Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar on Sunday to mark Karnataka Rajyotsava.

Shivakumar presented the awards at a ceremony held at Ravindra Kalakshetra in Bengaluru. A total of 71 individuals were selected for the State’s second-highest civilian honour in recognition of their contributions to various fields, including art, literature, journalism, sports, education, social service and industry.

Prasad Bidapa, a native of Kodagu, was honoured for his longstanding contribution to India's fashion and modelling industry and his efforts to promote Karnataka's traditional handlooms and sustainable textiles.

Over several decades, Bidapa has emerged as an influential figure in the Indian fashion industry, playing an important role in identifying and nurturing modelling talent. He has provided opportunities for aspiring models and contributed to the development of the country's fashion and modelling scene.

Beyond fashion choreography and styling, Bidapa has actively championed indigenous fabrics, traditional handlooms and sustainable textile practices. Through his initiatives, he has helped bring Karnataka's textile heritage into contemporary fashion, introducing traditional weaving and fabric traditions to wider audiences.

Dr A.B. Subbaiah, whose full name is Anjaparavanda Bopaiah Subbaiah, was selected for the award in recognition of his achievements and contribution to Indian hockey.

Born in Madikeri, Subbaiah developed an interest in hockey at the age of 14 while studying at St Michael's School in the town. He later received training at the Sports Authority of India hostel in Bengaluru, which laid the foundation for his career in competitive hockey.

He went on to represent India in several major international tournaments, including the Commonwealth Games. One of the notable achievements of his career was being part of the Indian team that won the gold medal at the 1998 Asian Games.

Between 1988 and 1998, Subbaiah represented the country in 285 international matches. He also had the distinction of representing and captaining the Indian national team during his career.

In recognition of his achievements in sports, he was previously conferred the Arjuna Award. The Karnataka Rajyotsava Award adds another significant honour to his sporting career.

The recognition of Bidapa and Subbaiah highlights Kodagu's contribution to Karnataka's fashion, cultural and sporting landscape, bringing distinction to the district.

Each award recipient will receive a cash prize of ₹5 lakh, a 25-gram gold medal and a commemorative citation plaque.
