Ponnampet: A very big Shivalinga, believed to be from the time of the Pandavas, was found recently at the bottom of Kunda Hill in Ponnampet, South Kodagu.
This huge Shivalinga was found under a grand tree in the coffee plantation belonging to Gummattira Kilan Ganapati and his brother Gummattira Darshan. It's believed that this Shivalinga could be around 800 years old.
According to a Star of Mysore reporter, after Shivalinga discovery, senior priests and elders from the Gummattira family, upon visiting the site, unanimously acknowledged its profound significance.
The ancient Shivalinga, standing at a height of 4 feet and a width of 3 feet, was discovered beneath a 'goli' tree. There are plans in progress to build a temple at the location in the future, symbolizing the historical and spiritual importance ingrained in the land.
The disclosure about a buried Shivalinga in the coffee estate surfaced through Kalyatanda Ajjappa. Continued excavation efforts revealed a variety of fascinating artifacts beneath the Shivalinga, such as a 'tirthanala,' an elephant pillar, stone bricks, a Somasutra, a 'Panipeeth,' and several foundation stones.
The Shivalinga, initially hidden in mud, underwent a ceremonial worship after its discovery. Guided by the expertise of Kalyatanda Ajjappa, the elaborate process included raising the Shivalinga. Directly accomplishing this task proved challenging, prompting the use of a rope. Following Ajjappa's advice, the Shivalinga was skillfully pulled with the help of calves.
