Madikeri: Akhila Kodava Samaja on Thursday 1 February has requested the naming of the main road in Madikeri city in honor of the Padma Shri awardee tennis player, Rohan Bopanna.

The members of the Akhila Kodava Samaja appealed to Madikeri Municipal Council President Anita Poovayya to name the main road of Madikeri after Padma Shri awardee Mr Rohan Bopanna in honor of the recent history he made as oldest male player to win Australian Open Grand Slam.

Mr Rohan Bopanna, a 43-year-old from Kodagu, made history on January 27, by becoming the oldest male player in the Open era to win a grand slam title.

Akhil Kodava Samaj President Pardanda Subramani Kaveerappa submitted the request.

The Padma Shri stands as the fourth-highest civilian honor in India, following the Bharat Ratna, Padma Vibhushan, and Padma Bhushan.

In 2017, Mr Bopanna achieved the distinction of being only the fourth Indian to secure a Grand Slam title by winning the mixed doubles alongside Gabriela Dabrowski at the French Open.
