Kakkabe: The annual festival or ‘Kumbyaaar Kalaadcha’ of Lord Igguthappa will be held on Saturday, March 23, at the temple premises in Padi, near Kakkabe.
Lord Igguthappa is a Kodava deity worshipped in Kodagu, not only by the Kodava community but also by other communities in the region. Deva Thakka, or hereditary managers of the Padi Igguthappa temple, Paradanḍa Prince, said that the festival's 'namme katt' has been enforced since March 10.
At the Kumbyaaar Kalaadcha festival, various rituals, including Ett Porata, Thulabara, special poojas, and sevas, are conducted. Ett Porata involves adorning oxen from specific households and having them carry loads of rice on their backs.
Every year, the temple draws hundreds of thousands of devotees from different regions of Karnataka and serves as the focal point for Puttari, the annual harvest festival of Kodagu. During Puttari, Lord Igguthappa is particularly revered, holding rights over the newly harvested crop.
The primary yearly temple celebration at Padi Igguthappa takes place during Minyaar, the Kodava month of Pisces. Additionally, four other festivals are commemorated in the temple. These include the Chingyaar festival on the tenth day of the Leo month, the Tholyaar festival observed on the tenth day of the Libra month, the Birchyaar Kalladcha festival during the Scorpio month, and the Kumbyaar Kalladcha festival in the month of Aquarius.
