New Delhi: In a significant move for the Indian coffee industry, the Central government has tabled the Coffee (Promotion and Development) Bill, 2024 in the budget session of Parliament, which began on Monday, July 22. The session, running until August 12, is scheduled for 16 sittings during which this crucial bill is set to be introduced, considered, and potentially passed.
The Coffee (Promotion and Development) Bill, 2024 aims to invigorate and advance the Indian coffee sector. A major component of the bill is the modernization of the Coffee Board, an organization established in 1942. This modernization effort is expected to streamline operations and improve the effectiveness of the board in supporting the industry.
The proposed legislation also focuses on fostering economic, scientific, and technical research in the coffee sector. This includes initiatives for developing new coffee varieties and enhancing sustainable production practices.
The Coffee Board, which has long played a pivotal role in the industry, may undergo a significant transition with the enactment of this new Act. By addressing modern needs and incorporating advanced research, the bill aims to position Indian coffee as a competitive force in the global market while promoting environmentally sustainable practices.
