Madikeri: In contrast to 2022, alcohol sales in Kodagu have experienced a slight uptick in 2023, with beer emerging as the highest-selling alcoholic beverage in the district, according to data.
Prajavani reported that by December 2023, a total of 19,456 boxes of Indian Made Liquor (IML) and an impressive 53,036 boxes of beer were sold. The year end sale witnessed robust business at over 230 liquor shops in the Kodagu district, marking a prosperous year for the liquor industry in 2023.
In the month of December 2022, 94,320 boxes of liquor were sold. 49,038 boxes of beer were sold. However, in 2023 92,207 boxes of liquor and 52,450 boxes of beer were sold in the month of December.

For December 2023, the liquor sales in Kodagu district were distributed as follows: 916 boxes in Madikeri taluk, 856 in Somwarpet taluk, and 341 in Virajpet taluk, resulting in a cumulative total of 2,113 boxes of liquor sold.
In the context of beer sales, Madikeri taluk witnessed a decrease of 452 boxes in December 2023 compared to the same period in 2022. Conversely, Somwarpet taluk reported a sale of 2,007 beer boxes, and Virajpet taluk saw 1,857 boxes sold in December 2023. Overall, according to sources from the Excise Department, the district recorded the sale of 3,412 beer boxes, as reported by Prajavani.
