Kakkabe: A peaceful human chain protest was organized by the Codava National Council (CNC) at Kakkabe Junction on July 1, 2024, against the large-scale conversion of pristine lands in the Cauvery catchment area.
According to N U Nachappa, the Supremo of the CNC, the protest was held to bring attention to the illegal activities of resort magnates, corporate houses, and others who are acquiring land for mega townships, villas, and resorts, causing harm to the environment and the indigenous Codava community.
The CNC alleges that 10 acres of land in the eco-sensitive zone have already been sold for ₹9.9 crore, and 3,000 rosewood trees have been illegally cut and sold. CNC has demanded a CBI investigation into the scandal.
The council also demands self-determination rights for the Codava community under international law and the Constitution of India, recognizing their sovereignty over their ancestral lands.
The protest saw participation from Codava community from the surrounding areas, registering their solidarity against the exploitation of their motherland.
