Madikeri: The Codava National Council (CNC) has urged the Union and Karnataka governments to provide adequate protection for renowned actress Rashmika Mandanna, who hails from the Codava community in Kodagu. The CNC claims that Rashmika is facing intimidation and bullying by a legislator, which they deem an act of hooliganism.
In a letter addressed to the Union Home Minister and Karnataka’s Home Minister, CNC Chairman N.U. Nachappa highlighted Rashmika’s achievements in the Indian film industry, where she has worked alongside Bollywood icons like Amitabh Bachchan and Salman Khan. The CNC stressed that Rashmika's right to make her own choices should be respected and that any attempts to coerce or harass her are unacceptable.
The council further alleged that the attacks against Rashmika are an example of “Codava phobia,” as they believe she is being targeted solely because of her ethnic background. The letter condemned the actions of a particular MLA from Mandya, stating that it is ironic that a representative from a region dependent on the Cauvery River would engage in such behavior against Rashmika, whom CNC referred to as a ‘beloved daughter of Mother Cauvery.’
The CNC also acknowledged the support extended to Rashmika by Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar and Virajpet MLA A.S. Ponnanna, who have publicly condemned the alleged bullying. The council called for immediate government intervention to ensure Rashmika’s safety and uphold her rights.
Rashmika, known for her roles in films such as Pushpa and Animal, has been a subject of criticism from the MLA, which the CNC finds unjustified. The council emphasised that such intimidation not only affects the actress personally but also undermines the dignity of the Codava people and the Cauvery region as a whole.
