Madapur: The Codava National Council (CNC) organized a peaceful Human Chain program at the Madapur Town Tri-Junction on Saturday at 10:30 AM. The demonstration aimed to protest the extensive environmental degradation and land conversion in the Cauvery catchment area in Kodagu also known as Coorg attributed allegedly to various developers, corporate entities, and corrupt officials.
The CNC highlighted the alarming transformation of pristine lands into commercial projects in Kodagu. CNC President Nandineravanda U Nachappa pointed out historical grievances, including landslides in 2018 and the impact of poorly maintained dams like the Harangi and Hancod. He urged the dismantling of these structures to prevent further environmental damage.
Nachappa argued that the Karnataka government's land leases to business tycoons in the 1960s led to significant deforestation and ecological disturbances. The CNC emphasized that the ongoing development projects threaten both the environment and the Codava cultural heritage.
“The Council demands immediate action and the enforcement of self-determination rights under international law for Codavaland to preserve natural resources and cultural identity,” CNC release stated. The next Human Chain program will be held at Suntikoppa on 18 August, followed by events in Kutta, Murnad, and Napoklu.
