Madikeri: The Codava National Council (CNC) will hold a peaceful Satyagraha on 1 November in Madikeri, marking the anniversary of the 1956 States Reorganisation Act.
The event, held from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. near the Deputy Commissioner’s Office, aims to draw attention to the CNC's longstanding call for Codava self-determination and regional autonomy, according to the CNC release.
“The CNC is seeking the establishment of a dedicated commission to address their demands for geopolitical autonomy under Article 244 and Article 371 of the Indian Constitution. Alternatively, we have advocated for the formation of a second States Reorganisation Commission,” NU Nachappa, president of CNC said.
The CNC argues that their homeland, historically known as the Part C state of Coorg, has seen its unique cultural and political identity overlooked since its merger with Karnataka in 1956.
The appeal, supported by former Union Minister Dr. Subramanian Swamy’s petition, highlights Codavas as indigenous people whose rights to self-determination are recognized under the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. The CNC asserts that Codavas have been treated as “second-class citizens” since the merger, calling it a “grave constitutional breach.”
Following the Satyagraha, CNC representatives will submit a detailed memorandum to key leaders, including the President and Prime Minister of India, Karnataka’s Chief Minister, and international dignitaries such as the United Nations Secretary-General, reinforcing their demand for Codava autonomy.
