Madikeri: On August 9, the Codava National Council (CNC) will conduct a peaceful Satyagraha in Madikeri, to mark the United Nations' International Day of World Indigenous Peoples, according to CNC president Nandineravanda U. Nachappa.
The event, scheduled from 10:30 AM to 11:30 AM near the Deputy Commissioner's office, aims to advocate for the rights of the indigenous Codava tribe.
“The CNC asserts that the Codavas, the original inhabitants of Coorg (Codavaland), have a historical and cultural connection to the land that dates back to the origins of humanity. The council argues that Codavaland, with its sacred sites, natural resources, and historical significance, deserves constitutional protection under international laws governing indigenous peoples' rights,” a release stated.
The CNC’s demands include the formal recognition of Codavaland's geopolitical autonomy and self-rule. Following the Satyagraha, CNC plans to submit a memorandum to various high-level officials, including the UN Secretary-General, UNESCO Director-General, and the President and Prime Minister of India, among others.
Nachappa, emphasized the importance of this demonstration for preserving Codava heritage and securing their political and cultural rights. The council's push for international and national recognition of Codava rights highlights their ongoing struggle for acknowledgment and autonomy.
The International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples is celebrated annually on August 9. This day is devoted to honoring and advancing the rights, cultures, and contributions of indigenous communities across the globe. Established by the UN General Assembly in December 1994, the observance aims to increase awareness of the unique needs and challenges faced by indigenous populations.
Each year, August 9 serves as a focal point for promoting recognition and support for the diverse and vital roles these communities play in our world. The day underscores the importance of preserving indigenous cultures and addressing their rights and issues.
