Bengaluru: The Coffee Board has introduced premium Geographical Indication (GI)-tagged single-serve coffee drip bags, marking a significant step towards boosting the domestic consumption of pure coffee in India.
These newly launched drip bags are designed for ease of use, requiring only hot water for brewing, eliminating the need for additional equipment. "A cup of high-quality black coffee can be prepared with just boiled water and a mug," stated Coffee Board Secretary and CEO K.G. Jagadeesha during a press briefing on Friday 28 March.

Each individual coffee pouch contains five distinct GI-tagged Arabica coffee varieties: Coorg Arabica, Chikmagalur Arabica, Bababudangiri Arabica, Araku Valley Arabica, and Monsooned Malabar Arabica.
According to Mr. Jagadeesha, these drip coffee bags, sold under the 'India Coffee' brand, will be accessible on various e-commerce platforms. "Our objective is to expand online sales to popularise and promote GI-tagged coffee, ensuring its availability to consumers nationwide," he added.

In addition to the drip coffee bags, the Coffee Board has also introduced speciality Indian coffees, including GI-tagged Monsooned Malabar Arabica Coffee and Mysore Nuggets Extra Bold Arabica Coffee. Monsooned Malabar, he highlighted, is a unique variety globally, as it undergoes an exclusive monsooning process where harvested coffee beans are exposed to seasonal rain and winds.
Encouraging Coffee Culture:
To foster a thriving coffee culture, the Coffee Board has been implementing initiatives such as Kaapi Shastra, Barista Skills training, and active participation in domestic exhibitions. Coffee Board Chairman M.J. Dinesh emphasised that these efforts aim to drive the consumption of pure coffee in the country.

“From the initial concept stage to the final product, coffee farmers and entrepreneurs are receiving training. Private coffee enterprises can also benefit from these initiatives and focus on promoting India’s GI-tagged pure coffee varieties,” Coffee Board officials stated.
As part of the Atal Innovation Mission, the Board has been offering training to coffee farmers and entrepreneurs. This initiative has facilitated the emergence of 68 coffee startups, including over 20 based in Karnataka.
