Srimangala: Following a series of tiger attacks that left a cow dead and another injured in broad daylight last week, the forest department has launched a combing operation to trap the tiger prowling in Srimangala, Kodagu district. The attacks, which occurred in the villages of West Nemmale and East Nemmale, have caused alarm among local residents.
As part of the operation, elephants Ajay and Sriram from the Mathigodu Elephant Camp have been brought in to assist in tracking the tiger. The operation is being closely monitored by Dr. Chittyappa, an expert in tiger behavior, and sharp shooter Ranjan, who is on standby should tranquilization become necessary.
Karnataka State Wildlife Board member Meriyanda Sanketh Pooviah is overseeing the operation. He confirmed that a bait has been placed at the location where the tiger killed livestock in West Nemmale. "We have initiated combing operations, and the progress is being reviewed regularly to ensure the safety of residents and the timely capture of the tiger," Pooviah said.
Combing operations are a methodical search tactic used by forest officials to locate wild animals, such as tigers, in dense forested areas. It involves the use of trained elephants, personnel, and sometimes trackers to methodically "comb" through the forest, sweeping from one end to the other in search of the animal. This technique is crucial in identifying the movement patterns of tigers and safely capturing them without endangering the public, according to forest department officials.
