Complaints filed over derogatory remarks on Field Marshal Cariappa, General Thimayya


Field Marshal K.M. Cariappa, India’s first Commander-in-Chief of the Army, and General K.S. Thimayya, a former Chief of Army Staff.

Bengaluru/Madikeri: Members of the Kodava community in Bengaluru have lodged complaints against an individual for allegedly posting derogatory remarks on social media about Field Marshal K.M. Cariappa, India’s first Commander-in-Chief of the Army, and General K.S. Thimayya, a former Chief of Army Staff.


The accused, identified as Srivatsa Bhat, reportedly made offensive comments in a WhatsApp group titled Saptha Sagara (Kadalu). The Bengaluru Kodava Samaja has registered a complaint at RT Nagar Police Station on 21 November at around 10.30 pm. Similarly, the Field Marshal K.M. Cariappa Kodava Okkotta(FMCKO) President M.K. Uthappa, along with other members, filed a formal complaint at Rajarajeshwari Nagar Police Station.


An FIR has been registered at RT Nagar Police Station under sections 192 and 352 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023.

In response to the incident, Kodagu-Mysuru MP Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar issued a strong statement condemning the remarks. “Such derogatory statements against Field Marshal Cariappa and General Thimayya are utterly unacceptable. Their sacrifices and contributions to India’s security are unparalleled and deserve the highest respect. I urge the authorities to take strict action against those responsible,” he stated.


Madikeri MLA Mantar Gowda, Virajpet MLA A.S. Ponnanna, LKodagu MLC Suja Kushalappa, Ajjinikanda Mahesh Nachaiah, President of Karnataka Kodava Sahitya Academy also condemned the remarks and called for prompt action by the police. Both leaders highlighted the significance of the two army veterans, who are revered figures in Kodagu and beyond.


The Kodagu units of the BJP and Congress, and Madikeri Kodava Samaja separately submitted a complaint to the Kodagu SP on Friday.

The Kodava community, known for its proud military heritage, has expressed outrage over the incident. Field Marshal Cariappa and General Thimayya remain iconic figures in Indian military history, symbolising duty and patriotism.
