Digital Scam Unveiled: Fraudsters Attempt to Target Kodagu Resident in Money Laundering Plot

Madikeri: In a recent digital arrest case, a Kodagu native was targeted by scammers who attempted to falsely link him to the Naresh Goyal money laundering case. Raj (name changed), a resident of Kiranganduru in Somwarpet, received a distressing call informing him that a fraudulent bank transaction had been reported from his account. The caller warned him that his account would be frozen within two hours.

According to a report in TNIE report, the automated AI voice on the call prompted Raj to press "9" for further details. Upon doing so, he was connected to an individual who posed as a police officer. This impersonator confirmed that a fraudulent transaction had taken place from Raj's bank account and cautioned him that a CBI inquiry would be initiated.

The call was then transferred to another person who claimed to be a Mumbai Police officer. This individual told Raj that during a raid at the residence of Jet Airways founder Naresh Goyal, 487 bank cards had been seized, and one of those cards belonged to Raj. The fraudsters went on to tell Raj that he was the 191st accused in the money laundering case involving Goyal.

The scammers also warned Raj that Goyal had ties to the drug mafia and had allegedly threatened the lives of several women and children. They intimidated Raj with threats to his family’s safety during a video call.

Shocked by the developments, Raj filed a complaint with the District Cyber Crime Cell and took immediate steps to safeguard his finances by temporarily closing his bank accounts. He urged the authorities to take swift action against the fraudsters who impersonate law enforcement officers and called on the public to remain alert.

According to data from the Karnataka Police Department, two digital arrest cases have been registered in Kodagu, with a total of ₹10,830,023 defrauded, of which ₹1,487,000 has been recovered. Investigations are ongoing.
