Bengaluru: Former member of Rajya Sabha Subramanian Swamy appeared before the Chief Justice’s Bench at the Karnataka High Court on 23 January, Thursday regarding a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) demanding regional autonomy for the indigenous Kodava community.
The PIL seeks geopolitical autonomy under provisions of the Constitution, similar to arrangements granted in other parts of India, according to a press release by the Codava National Council (CNC).
The Bench, comprising Chief Justice N. V. Anjaria and Justice K. V. Arvind, allowed pending intervention applications but announced that no further applications would be admitted. Parties involved in the case were instructed to complete their pleadings by 3 March 2025. The next and final hearing has been scheduled for 11 March 2025, CNC release stated.

The PIL, titled WP on Codavaland Geo-Political Autonomy, was filed by Swamy as a party in person, assisted by counsel Kieran Narayan. CNC Chairman N. U. Nachappa represented the Codava National Council as Petitioner No. 2. The Union Ministry of Home Affairs, Union Ministry of Law, and the State of Karnataka were listed as respondents.
“The CNC continues its advocacy for constitutional recognition and regional autonomy for the Codava community,” Nachappa said.
