DySP Ganapathi Suicide Case: Supreme Court Gives Clean Chit to Energy Minister KJ George

On June 17, 2016, DySP M.K. Ganapathy tragically took his own life by hanging in a hotel room in Madikeri, Kodagu.

Bengaluru: In a significant relief for Energy Minister K.J. George, the Supreme Court has dismissed the criminal proceedings against him and two IPS officers, clearing them of any wrongdoing. The case, which centred on allegations of abetting the suicide of Deputy Superintendent of Police M.K. Ganapathy on July 7, 2016, has been quashed.

With this K.J. George emerges victorious in the eight-year legal battle over Ganapathy's suicide, with the Supreme Court upholding the CBI's decision to clear the minister of any wrongdoing.

In a statement to The Kodagu Express, K.J. George, visibly relieved, expressed his confidence in the legal system, stating, "I have full faith in the law, and it has once again proven that justice prevails. I am grateful to be cleared of the false accusations against me."

On June 17, 2016, DySP M.K. Ganapathy tragically took his own life by hanging in a hotel room in Madikeri, Kodagu. Before his death, he recorded a video in which he named the then-Home Minister K.J. George. Amidst the ensuing controversy, the government handed the investigation over to the CBI.

In 2019, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) cleared K.J. George, along with two senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officers—Director General of Police (Internal Security Division) A.M. Prasad and Inspector General of Police Pronab Mohanty—of any involvement in M.K. Ganapathy’s suicide.

Before this, the suicide of DySP Ganapathy was investigated by a one-member commission headed by Justice K.N. Kesavanarayan. On February 27, 2018, the commission submitted its report to the government, exonerating Minister K.J. George and IPS officers Pranab Mohanty and A.M. Prasad of any wrongdoing.

However, Ganapathy's sister Sabita and others, undeterred, challenged the CBI's decision to clear Minister George by taking the case to the Supreme Court.
