Madikeri: The hilly district in Karnataka-Kodagu has witnessed a surge in fatal accidents over the last three years. From the fiscal year 2020-21 to 2022-23, the district has recorded a total of 192 fatal accidents.
Data accessed by The Kodagu Express indicates that in the year 2020-21, there were 62 reported fatal accidents. In 2021-22, this number slightly decreased to 59, but it rose again to 67 in 2022-23, as per data from the transport department.
However, the Kodagu district has reported fewer fatal accidents compared to other districts in Karnataka. In the broader context, Karnataka as a whole has recorded a total of 29,173 accidents over the past three years, with other districts contributing to a higher number.
Meanwhile, during the last three years, the transport department has suspended 5,965 driving licenses (DL) of drivers who are allegedly responsible for fatal accidents in Karnataka, the data from the transport department revealed.
The police department officials said that most accidents happen due to overspeeding.
