What is the new Kodagu University logo?
Kodagu University at Chikka Aluvara in the district has launched a new emblem that celebrates the region’s cultural depth and ecological heritage. Interestingly, this comes at a time when the university is facing possible closure, as suggested by a recent government review.
Who are the designers behind the emblem?
The emblem has been designed by Sullimada Darshan Poovappa from Nalkeri in Kodagu and Prasanna Udayakumar Gaonkar from Yellapur, Sirsi in Uttara Kannada district. Both designers studied at Chamarajendra Government College of Visual Arts (CAVA), Mysuru, and now work as visual designers in Bengaluru.
What does the emblem represent?
The design merges contemporary visual style with traditional symbolism. It features six elements that define Kodagu’s identity:
The sun, representing wisdom and insight
A book, symbolising knowledge and learning
Coffee beans, acknowledging Kodagu’s status as India’s premier coffee-producing region
An elephant, representing the area’s rich biodiversity
The River Cauvery and Talacauvery, marking spiritual and environmental significance

What do the colours in the emblem signify?
The emblem uses orange and blue to convey meaning. Orange stands for energy, confidence, and a spirit of renewal, while blue reflects peace, trust, and stability. Together, they reinforce the university’s motto: Work is Worship.
Why is the university facing closure?
A Cabinet subcommittee headed by Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar has reviewed the viability of several universities created during the previous BJP-led administration. The committee found that keeping these institutions operational would cost the state approximately ₹342 crore annually. Kodagu University, being one of the newer establishments, has been identified for possible closure as part of this cost-cutting measure.
What would the closure mean for Kodagu?
If the university is shut, local students will be forced to rely once again on distant institutions like Mangalore University (200 km away) and University of Mysore (130 km away). This is expected to place additional burdens on students, especially women, those from lower-income families, and residents of remote villages who already face barriers to accessing higher education.
What does this situation highlight?
While the emblem points to a hopeful vision rooted in local pride, the looming closure raises concerns about the future of higher education in Kodagu. It reflects the broader issue of balancing budget constraints with regional development and educational equity.
