Explained: Why Heavy Goods Vehicles Are Banned in Kodagu During the Rainy Season

The ban applies to goods transport vehicles with a registration weight of more than 18,500 kg.

Madikeri: The Kodagu district administration has announced a ban on the movement of heavy goods vehicles through the district during the rainy season. This decision has been taken in light of the potential threats posed by these vehicles to road safety and stability, especially during heavy rains.

Why has the ban been implemented?

According to an official statement by Deputy Commissioner of Kodagu Venkat Raja, who is also chairman of the district’s Regional Transport Authority (RTA), the daily movement of heavy goods vehicles in the district poses a significant threat of landslips and accidents on the roads, which deteriorate further during the rainy season. The condition of the roads worsens with continuous heavy rainfall, making them more susceptible to damage from the weight and volume of heavy vehicles.

What are the details of the ban?

The ban applies to goods transport vehicles with a registration weight of more than 18,500 kg, multi-axle trucks, bullet tankers, ship cargo containers, long chassis trucks, articulated vehicles, as well as sand and timber transportation trucks. The restriction will remain in place until the conclusion of the rainy season, specifically from July 1 to 30.

Which vehicles are exempted from the ban?

Certain vehicles have been exempted from this ban. These include vehicles carrying essential goods such as cooking gas, fuel, and milk. Additionally, vehicles used for government work, school and college vehicles, and other public passenger vehicles are also exempt.

How will the ban be implemented and enforced?

To ensure compliance with this directive, the Superintendent of Police in Kodagu has been authorized to install signboards indicating the ban. Furthermore, police and Transport Department officials have been instructed to establish checkposts at Kushalnagar and Sampaje on the district border to monitor vehicle movement on National Highway 275 around the clock. Mobile patrolling will also be conducted to ensure that the ban is not violated.
