Madikeri: Kodagu's district administration has enforced prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) in S. Kattemadu village, effective until January 2, 2025. The move follows escalating tensions between two communities over a dress code dispute related to temple entry.
The restrictions cover a 5-km radius around the Maha Mruthyunjaya Temple in S. Kattemadu village, located in Madikeri taluk. The unrest began on December 28 when temple authorities barred locals dressed in traditional Kodava attire from entering, citing bylaws requiring devotees to wear dhotis. This led to a heated exchange between those in Kodava attire and the temple management.
To prevent further escalation, the police have banned processions, rallies, and the chanting of provocative slogans in the area.
The incident has sparked outrage among the Kodava community, with several members viewing the action as an attack on their cultural identity. In response, Maletira Srinivas, secretary of the Virajpet Kodava Samaj, announced plans for a ‘Kattemadu Chalo’ protest during a press conference on Saturday.
Security has been heightened around the temple, with additional police forces deployed to maintain order. Superintendent of Police K. Ramarajan stated that the security measures will remain in place until the situation normalises.
Political leaders have also weighed in on the controversy. MLA A.S. Ponnanna, who is also a legal adviser to the Chief Minister, suggested revising the temple’s bylaws. Mysuru MP Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar called for a peaceful resolution, while Madikeri MLA Manthar Gowda urged avoiding divisive narratives.
