Srimangala: Following a successful tiger capture in West Nemmale, South Kodagu, forest officials have launched another operation in the Balele area to trap a tiger responsible for a series of livestock attacks.
The operation began on Friday, targeting a tiger that has killed seven cattle in the past one and a half months around Devanuru village.
The tiger, identified as "Nagarhole U61," is a small male that was caught on camera traps set up at the sites of the attacks. The operation is being led by Meriyanda Sanketh Poovaiah, a member of the Karnataka State Wildlife Board. Speaking to The Kodagu Express, Poovaiah noted that the tiger had been continuously attacking livestock in the area. "The tiger was captured on camera, and with this evidence, two elephants, Ashok and Abhimanyu, from the Mathigodu Elephant Camp, have been brought in to assist. Since the tiger has been identified, we are confident it will be easier to capture, unlike in West Nemmale where identification was an issue," he said.
The operation has brought a sense of hope to local farmers, workers, and cattle owners, who have been anxious due to the repeated attacks. Poovaiah expressed confidence that this mission would be as successful as the earlier "Nemmale Tiger Operation."
DCF (Deputy Conservator of Forests) PA Seema confirmed that all preparations have been made for the tiger capture. The initial phase involves combing the area to confirm the tiger’s location. Once the tiger is found, it will be returned to the forest. In the second phase, a trap will be set using a cattle carcass to lure the animal, with plans to either tranquilize or capture it using a dart gun.
Permission for this operation was granted by Karnataka’s Forest and Environment Minister, Eshwar Khandre, following a request from Virajpet MLA, A.S. Ponnanna.
