Gonikoppal: Coffee farmers in Kodagu are facing significant challenges as recent heavy rains have caused severe issues for the region’s coffee crops. According to coffee board officials, the persistent rainfall over the past few weeks has resulted in widespread berry dropping and the onset of fungal diseases, leaving many farmers in distress.
Reports indicate that the heavy rains have led to berry dropping, which is partly attributed to nutrient deficiencies caused by the excessive moisture. Officials noted that while initial observations point to these issues, a comprehensive assessment of crop loss will be conducted once the rains subside to provide a clearer picture of the damage.
In addition to berry dropping, coffee growers in the region are contending with black rot, a significant fungal disease that affects both Arabica and Robusta varieties during the monsoon season. Black rot is characterized by the blackening and rotting of infected leaves, berries, and young twigs. In severely affected areas, this disease has resulted in crop losses ranging from 10 to 20 percent.
The situation is particularly dire in South Kodagu, where many farmers have reported substantial berry drop due to the combination of heavy rains and strong winds. Growers in this region are increasingly concerned about the impact on their yields and the potential for long-term damage to their coffee crops.
