Heavy Rains Trigger Landslip, Damaging Kodagu School Building

Due to the relentless heavy rains, all schools in Kodagu have been closed since Monday.

Madikeri: A government school building in Koinadu village, Kodagu, has been significantly damaged by a landslip caused by heavy rainfall. The incident led to the destruction of four classrooms at the government higher primary school.

Due to the relentless heavy rains, all schools in Kodagu have been closed since Monday. Following this incident, the Department of Public Instruction in Madikeri decided to relocate the affected students to another government higher primary school in Sampaje, as landslips continue to pose a significant threat.

Emergency personnel from the Department of Fire and Emergency Services quickly arrived at the scene to transfer essential items such as records, books, and stationery to a safer location. "There has been no damage to the students’ records; the documents are safe, though some furniture and other items were affected," stated Deputy Director of Public Instruction Rangadhamappa.

Madikeri Tahsildar Praveen Kumar, along with Mr. Rangadhamappa and other DPI officials, inspected the damage. Mr. Rangadhamappa mentioned that the school, which accommodates 65 students, would temporarily operate out of the Sampaje school, located about 2 kilometers away. This school is larger and equipped with additional classrooms to accommodate the displaced students.

The DDPI has also requested the Deputy Commissioner to instruct the Public Works Department to survey school buildings that are in a state of disrepair. "The survey report is expected soon," he noted, adding that minor repair estimates for school buildings in Madikeri and Virajpet taluks have already been prepared.

Mr. Rangadhamappa expressed concerns that the Koinadu school might face future landslip threats, prompting the Revenue Department to search for alternative government land in the village to relocate the school. "Apart from the Koinadu school, no other schools in Kodagu are currently facing landslip issues," he concluded.
