Siddapura: The Codava National Council (CNC) organized a peaceful human chain at the Mysore-Virajpet circle in Siddapura on Monday 17, June to protest the alleged large-scale conversion of agrarian lands in the Cauvery catchment area. The event saw participation from local Codavas and Codavathis, who expressed their concerns about the environmental and cultural impacts of these conversions.
The CNC highlighted the alarming trend of agrarian lands being acquired by resort magnates, corporate houses, economic offenders, MNCs, and NRIs. “These entities are converting fertile lands into mega townships, villas, and housing sites, threatening the ecological balance and the socio-cultural fabric of Coorg,” CNC president N.U. Nachappa said.
Mr Nachappa, emphasized that these developments violate the Dr. Swaminathan Committee's recommendations, which advocate for the preservation of agricultural lands.
Participants in the human chain called for self-determination rights and geopolitical autonomy for the Codava community under international law and the Indian Constitution. They believe this is essential to safeguard their identity, heritage, and the region’s biodiversity.
The event concluded with a pledge of solidarity towards the CNC’s mission and the singing of the national anthem.
