Dubai/Bengaluru: Former cricketer Robin Uthappa who is native of Kodagu has responded to an arrest warrant issued against him in connection with an Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF) deposits fraud case.
The warrant demands Uthappa pay outstanding dues of ₹23,36,602 to workers of Centaurus Lifestyle Brands Pvt. Ltd., where he was listed as a director. In a statement shared on X, Uthappa clarified his association with Centaurus Lifestyle Brands Pvt. Ltd., Strawberry Lencería Pvt. Ltd., and Berryz Fashion House.
He stated, “In 2018-19, I was appointed as a director in these companies due to my financial contributions to them in the form of loans. However, I did not have an active executive role, nor was I involved in the day-to-day operations of the businesses.”
Uthappa, who is based in Dubai, explained that his commitments as a professional cricketer and commentator left him with no time or expertise to engage in business operations. “In fact, I do not play an executive role in any other companies I have funded, till date,” he added.
The former cricketer revealed that the companies failed to repay the loans he had extended, prompting him to initiate legal proceedings, which are ongoing. He further mentioned that he had resigned from his directorships several years ago and had provided documentation to authorities confirming his lack of involvement.
Uthappa, who played 59 matches for India and was part of the team that won the inaugural 2007 T20 World Cup, maintained that he had no role in the matter and reiterated his commitment to resolving the issue through legal channels.
