Madikeri: In a significant operation, Kodagu police have dismantled an international drug network involved in smuggling high-value hydro ganja from Bangkok to Dubai via Kodagu. The authorities have arrested seven individuals, including suspects from Kerala, and seized 3.31 kg of hydro ganja, valued at ₹3 crore.
According to Kodagu District Superintendent of Police K. Ramarajan, the drug smuggling ring was transporting the narcotic substance from Bangkok to Kodagu through the Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru. The drugs were later being smuggled to Dubai by air.
“Hydro ganja, cultivated in air-conditioned rooms under artificial lighting, is readily available in Bangkok, catering primarily to wealthy clients who pay exorbitant prices. We are yet to determine if the accused were selling it locally. The drugs were stored in a house in Gonikoppa, Kodagu, with plans to transport them to Dubai. Five of the accused were arrested en route to Madikeri, while one suspect was apprehended in Bengaluru, and the main accused, Mehroof from Kerala, was arrested at Kochi airport after attempting to flee,” SP said on Wednesday.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Naziruddin M.U. (26) from Heggala, Kodagu; Yahya C.H. (28) from Edapala, Kodagu; Aknas (26) from Kunjila, Kodagu; Wajeed (26) from Betoli village, Kodagu; and Riyaz (44) from Kannur, Kerala. The police continue their investigation to uncover further details about the drug network and its operations.
