International Women’s Day 2024 - Codava Satyagraha: Memorandum to Authorities


The memorandum addresses authorities such as the President, Prime Minister, Home Minister, and global organizations like the United Nations and UNESCO.

Madikeri: Codava National Council (CNC) observed International Women’s Day 2024 on 8 March with a unique Satyagraha, urging authorities to empower Codava women on par with their counterparts in the country. A memorandum has been submitted to key dignitaries, emphasizing the need for political and constitutional rights for Codava women.


The memorandum addresses authorities such as the President, Prime Minister, Home Minister, and global organizations like the United Nations and UNESCO.


The central theme revolves around according political and constitutional empowerment to Codava women. This initiative aims to uplift the minuscule minority within the Codava Tribal Race, ensuring their rights align with the Constitution and the UN Charter.


The memorandum acknowledges the historical significance of International Women’s Day, which has been observed annually on March 8 since 1975. It traces back to the 1908 labor movement and highlights the struggles and achievements of women across the world.


Campaign Theme - "Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress": CNC emphasizes the campaign theme of International Women's Day 2024, which focuses on economic empowerment. The memorandum outlines specific demands for the inclusion and upliftment of Codava women, aligning with this year’s theme.


NU Nachappa Codava, President CNC listed following demands of CNC on International Women’s Day 2024:


Internal quota for Codava women in legislative bodies.

Grant of government lands, specifically 10 acres of leased coffee lands for Codava women.

Adequate representation in the proposed Central Vista/New Parliament.

Speedy issuance of Gun Exemption Certificates for Codava women.

Introduction of “Pathak Bhagya” for Codavathi brides and “Kupadhi Kool Bhagya” for pregnant Codava women.

Advocacy for menstrual paid leave law in Parliament.


The memorandum pays homage to Chonira Muthamma, the first women IFS officer, highlighting her relentless fight against gender bias, which paved the way for future generations.


CNC concludes by expressing gratitude for the authorities’ attention and calls for legislative measures to include Codava Tribal Race in the Scheduled Tribe category. The Codava National Council believes that this step is crucial for the protection and promotion of Codava cultural traits.


The International Women’s Day 2024 - Codava Sathyagraha aims to bring attention to the unique challenges faced by Codava women and urges authorities to take affirmative action for their empowerment.
