Bengaluru: The Congress-led Karnataka government has dealt a significant blow to consumers by approving a Rs 4 per litre hike in milk prices, effective April 1. The decision was announced on Thursday, March 27, following a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.

Earlier this week, Siddaramaiah had convened a meeting with the chairpersons and managing directors of the Karnataka Cooperative Milk Producers' Federation Ltd (KMF) and district milk unions. The Chief Minister had previously stated that any revision in prices would be considered only if the entire additional revenue directly benefited dairy farmers.

Animal Husbandry and Sericulture Minister K. Venkatesh made the official announcement, confirming the revised prices for various Nandini milk products.

The new rates are as follows:

Toned milk (blue packet): Rs 46 per litre (previously Rs 42)

Homogenised toned milk: Rs 47 per litre (previously Rs 43)

Green packet: Rs 50 per litre (previously Rs 46)

Shubham (special/orange packet): Rs 52 per litre (previously Rs 48)

Curd: Rs 54 per kg (previously Rs 50)

Samruddhi (pink packet, full cream): Rs 60 per litre (previously Rs 56)

Venkatesh stated that the decision to increase prices was made to support dairy farming in Karnataka, considering the rising costs of milk production and processing. “The price of Nandini milk and curd has been increased by Rs 4 per litre/kg to encourage dairy farmers across the state,” he said.

The minister assured that measures would be taken to ensure that milk producers receive the revised rates directly. Additionally, the Rs 2 per litre price increase, which had been implemented on June 26, 2024, will be withdrawn. Instead, the Rs 4 hike will be uniformly applied across 500 ml and 1-litre packages.

This price revision follows a proposal submitted by the Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF) last month, which had suggested a Rs 5 per litre hike for Nandini milk and related products. The KMF had justified the proposal by stating that 90 per cent of the increased amount would go to dairy farmers. Despite the latest hike, KMF maintains that Nandini milk remains more affordable than similar products in other states.
