Madikeri: After a spate of elephant attacks in Kodagu, government representatives have finally taken notice, following persistent appeals from residents for intervention. The Karnataka government has sanctioned ₹21 crore to address the increasing instances of human-elephant conflict in the district.

Sanket Poovaiah, a member of the State Wildlife Board, highlighted that Kodagu witnesses the highest number of human-wildlife conflicts in the state, resulting in loss of lives, injuries, and extensive damage to crops. “A recent elephant attack near Chennangolli claimed a life. In response, Virajpet MLA A.S. Ponnanna sought permission from the forest minister to capture the elephant, which was successfully carried out,” he stated.

To implement long-term solutions, Ponnanna has initiated discussions with the government on strengthening existing trenches and installing railway barricades in select panchayat areas within the Virajpet constituency. The state has approved ₹21 crore to fund these measures. The MLA is set to visit affected areas on February 22 or 23, alongside officials, to assess the situation and finalise fund allocations accordingly.

Additionally, Poovaiah mentioned that a 2,000-hectare area has been identified within the Virajpet constituency for relocating elephants. However, this proposal is still awaiting government approval.
