Virajpet: The Karnataka State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) expressed deep distress upon inspecting the living conditions of the Yarava community members in the Balugodu hamlet of Virajpet taluk, Kodagu district.
On Wednesday, January 31, SHRC Chairman L. Narayanaswamy inspected the hamlets, assessed the situation, and instructed Kodagu district officials to guarantee the extension of basic amenities. A progress report is mandated to be submitted to the commission, with a follow-up review scheduled in 20 days. Immediate measures have been directed for the provision of drinking water through tankers to the Balugodu hamlet, according to a report in The Hindu.
Speaking to reporters, Mr. Narayanaswamy remarked that while India celebrates achievements like Chandrayaan and holds a position among the top five economies based on GDP ranking, there are individuals living in extreme poverty without access to fundamental amenities such as housing, electricity, and connectivity. This raises questions about the true extent of India's development, he added.
Mr. Narayanaswamy expressed his concern, stating, "Those within the system and the government enjoy all amenities, while those outside are deprived of basic necessities, and that is a matter of sorrow." Emphasizing the economic impoverishment of the Yaravas, he urged local authorities to prioritize providing them with all necessary amenities. He highlighted the disparity, noting that not even 5% of government benefits have reached the Yarava community.
Later, the commission received complaints from the public, with individuals urgently requesting the repair of Morarji Desai Residential School. Additionally, it conducted inquiries into cases related to human rights violations in the taluk.
Deputy Commissioner Venkat Raja, ZP CEO Varnit Negi, Superintendent of Police K. Ramrajan, and others were present.
