VATICAN/MADIKERI: The Christian community in Kodagu is mourning the death of Pope Francis, the first Latin American leader of the Roman Catholic Church, who passed away on Monday, April 21, 2025.

In an official video statement from the Vatican, Cardinal Kevin Ferrell, the camerlengo, announced: “At 7:35 this morning, the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the home of the Father. His entire life was dedicated to the service of the Lord and of his Church.”

Pope Francis had been hospitalised at Gemelli Hospital in Rome on February 14, after experiencing breathing difficulties for several days. He was diagnosed with a severe respiratory illness linked to bronchitis and was discharged on March 24 after several weeks of treatment.

The 88-year-old pontiff had long struggled with various health issues, including knee and hip pain, as well as an inflamed colon. His vulnerability to respiratory infections was compounded by a lung operation in his youth, during which part of his right lung was removed.

Elected the 266th pope on March 13, 2013, Francis brought a humble, reform-minded approach to the papacy. According to canon law, the Pope is regarded as the successor to the Apostle Peter, the head of the college of bishops, the Vicar of Christ, and the spiritual leader of the worldwide Catholic Church.

Churches across Kodagu held special prayers for his soul and remembered his efforts to promote peace, dialogue, and compassion throughout the world.
