Madikeri: Kodagu(Coorg) has once again reaffirmed its position as one of Karnataka’s premier tourist destinations, drawing an impressive 45.72 lakh visitors in 2024. This marks a steady rise from the 43.99 lakh footfall recorded in 2023, indicating a consistent upward trend in tourism, according to the tourism department.
The increase of nearly two lakh visitors over the previous year underscores Kodagu’s rising popularity, especially as a centre for coffee-related tourism and nature-based experiences.
Speaking to reporters in Madikeri on Thursday, Deputy Director of Tourism Anita Bhaskar described the current period as a “golden era” for Kodagu’s tourism sector. “We are witnessing a significant surge in visitors who are eager to explore Kodagu’s natural beauty. The district continues to remain a preferred travel destination, as reflected in the growing numbers,” she said.

Anita Bhaskar highlighted that the long-vacant post of Deputy Director for Tourism in Madikeri was filled only a year ago, acknowledging the district’s importance on the tourism map. She outlined several ongoing and upcoming initiatives aimed at enhancing visitor experiences and promoting responsible tourism practices.
Under various government schemes, 23 tourist locations have been identified for development. To assist visitors, nine guides have already been appointed, with ten more "Pravasi Mitras" expected to be deployed at additional sites shortly, Anita Bhaskar said.
Mandalapatti selected under the "One District, One Destination" initiative:
Mandalapatti, a popular hill station known for its rugged terrain and scenic views, has been selected under the "One District, One Destination" initiative. Plans are underway to upgrade infrastructure at the site, catering particularly to adventure seekers, according to Anita Bhaskar.
“In a significant step forward, Kodagu is also being incorporated into an official tourist circuit for the first time. Details of the new circuit are expected to be released soon. Efforts are ongoing to develop a new attraction titled “Coorg Village” near Raja Seat in Madikeri. Additionally, in a move to promote local produce, the tourism department has partnered with the Orange Growers Cooperative in Gonikoppal to popularise Kodagu’s famed oranges among travellers,” she explained.
An allocation of ₹1 crore has been sanctioned for the development of Abbey Falls, Iruppu Falls, and Malatirike Hills in Virajpet. Anita Bhaskar also appealed to hotel, homestay, and lodge owners to display signage on their premises to support the ban on single-use plastics and promote a “trash-free” Kodagu. She stressed the need for better transportation links to adventure tourism hotspots and welcomed suggestions for reintroducing toy trains at Raja Seat and hosting a “Pravasi Utsava” to attract more visitors.
