Virajpet: With the rise in cases of the Covid JN.1 subvariant in Kerala, health officials from the Kodagu district have initiated vehicle checks at the Perumbadi check post along the Karnataka-Kerala border.

Authorities are checking passengers entering the Kodagu district from Kerala via private vehicles.

According to a senior official, "If an individual is identified as symptomatic, they will be referred to Virajpet Government Hospital for additional testing. Fortunately, there have been no instances of symptomatic patients detected thus far in the checkpost."

The Karnataka Health Department released an advisory on December 19, instructing individuals aged 60 and above, those with comorbidities, pregnant women, and lactating mothers to wear face masks when outdoors.  They were also urged to avoid closed and poorly ventilated spaces, and crowded areas. This  advisory was issued in response  to increasing number Covid-19 JN.1 subvariant cases in Kerala.

Those with respiratory symptoms like fever, cough, cold, and running nose shall seek medical consultation early, and they should wear face masks (covering nose and mouth) and avoid visiting closed, poorly ventilated spaces, and crowded areas.

The government advisory states that people should follow good personal hygiene, including frequent hand washing. “When unwell, stay at home, and minimize contact with other people, especially seniors and those who are vulnerable. At crowded places, particularly if not well-ventilated, wearing a mask is advised. When traveling overseas, stay vigilant and adopt relevant travel precautions, such as wearing a mask at the airport and inside the aircraft, and avoiding crowded areas with poor ventilation,” the advisory added.

A circular has been issued by the government to authorities in districts bordering Kerala and Tamil Nadu, emphasizing the need for heightened vigilance, adequate testing, and prompt reporting of Covid cases. The health department highlighted the current Covid-19 situation, the appearance of the JN.1 subvariant, ongoing winter conditions, and the upcoming year-end and New Year festivities, urging the public to adhere to precautionary measures advised by the Covid-19 State Technical Advisory Committee (TAC).
