Madikeri: The authorities of the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) in Kodagu have directed homestays in the district to register and obtain a compulsory license for their operations. This initiative aims to ensure compliance, as a significant number of homestays have yet to acquire the FSSAI license, despite providing food services to guests.
“Registration and licence is a must but many homestays were running without complying with the norms under the Act,” a release by FSSAI stated.
Anil Dhavan, an official from the FSSAI office in Madikeri, emphasized that Kodagu is a well-known tourist destination. He urged homestays to prioritize the registration and acquisition of FSSAI licenses. “This is essential in the best interest of tourists who expect to be provided with food of high quality and hygiene standards,” he added.
Reportedly, around 800 homestays had completed registration with the Tourism Department, and more than 450 of them had obtained certificates. However, unverified reports and estimates suggest that Kodagu boasts over 4,000 homestays, comprising approximately 20,000 rooms, and a significant number of them continue to operate without valid licenses.
