Madikeri: Kodagu district Deputy Commissioner Venkat Raja has mandated that all shops, commercial establishments, hotels, hospitals, industrial buildings, educational institutions, government offices, and other entities operating under licenses from local bodies and other authorities must incorporate 60 percent Kannada in their name boards.
During the recent district-level committee meeting focused on the comprehensive development of Kannada, the Deputy Commissioner presided over the meeting. Emphasizing the importance of having 60 percent Kannada on name boards, it was reiterated that compliance with this requirement is mandatory.

“The local bodies or competent authorities to ensure its implementation in all establishments. The penalty for the violation of the rule is ₹5,000 for the first time, ₹10,000 for the second time, and ₹20,000 for the third time. If the rule was not implemented even after slapping the penalty for the third time, then licences will be cancelled,” Mr Raja said.
The Kannada Language Comprehensive Development (Amendment) Bill, 2024 has been enacted by the state government, requiring all business establishments in the State to prominently feature name boards with 60% of the text in Kannada on the upper half of the boards.
This legislation mandates that name boards of various entities, including commercial, industrial, and business undertakings, trusts, counseling centers, hospitals, laboratories, amusement centers, hotels, etc., should consist of 60% Kannada content.
The Bill further stipulates that the display of 60% Kannada language on boards is applicable to State government departments, PSUs, cooperative and public undertakings, educational institutions, banks, other financial institutions, private industries, and universities. Additionally, the legislation emphasizes that the display of officers' designations should primarily be in Kannada.
