Gonikoppa: Kodagu, often referred to as Coorg, is witnessing a surge in tourism and real estate development that is raising concerns about environmental degradation and cultural erosion. The district, known for its lush greenery and pristine landscapes, has become a hotspot for land purchases by outsiders, leading to growing discontent among local residents.

In a bid to protect the region’s fragile ecosystem and heritage, Col. C.P. Muthanna (Retd), coordinator of the Save Kodagu and Cauvery Campaign, has taken a strong stance. He has placed signboards across his estate in Kodagu, urging visitors and outsiders to refrain from buying land in the district.

The signboards carry a pointed message: “Dear visitors and outsiders, please do not look to buy land in Kodagu. Do not separate our land from our people. You may face legal and other problems.”

The real estate boom, driven by tourism and migration, has led to deforestation and strain on local resources, further exacerbating environmental challenges. Residents like Col. Muthanna are worried that the influx of outsiders could dilute Kodagu’s unique cultural identity and traditions.  Muthanna said, “I have recently put up this Board in my property. We need a Thousand such Boards all across Kodagu.”

While Kodagu remains a favoured destination for tourists and investors, the campaign underscores the need for sustainable development and stricter land acquisition regulations to preserve the district’s natural beauty and cultural heritage. Local activists and organisations are calling for government intervention to address these concerns and strike a balance between tourism, development, and conservation.
