Madikeri: In response to a spate of bank robberies that sparked public concern, the Kodagu police held a meeting on Tuesday with representatives of public sector banks, cooperative banks, finance companies, and jewellery stores operating in the district. The session, led by Superintendent of Police (SP) K. Ramarajan, focused on implementing enhanced safety protocols to prevent future incidents.

Addressing the gathering, SP Ramarajan emphasised the importance of robust CCTV surveillance within and outside bank and jewellery store premises. He instructed that all cameras remain operational at all times and that high-definition equipment capable of capturing clear footage, even in low-light conditions, be installed.

To ensure effective evidence retention, SP Ramarajan directed financial institutions and jewellery stores to adopt cloud-based or alternative storage systems capable of retaining footage for a minimum of six months. He stressed that such footage should not be deleted within this period to aid investigations if necessary.

The installation of burglar alarms was highlighted as a key measure to alert neighbours and authorities in case of unauthorised entry. Bank officials were also reminded to adhere to their head office protocols, particularly while transporting cash for ATMs, ensuring armed personnel accompany such operations.

Helpline number 112 was reiterated as a critical resource for reporting suspicious activities around bank and jewellery store premises.

Additionally, the police called on local bodies to install high-quality cameras in public spaces. Banks were encouraged to utilise their corporate social responsibility (CSR) funds to enhance surveillance on highways and other critical areas.
