Bhagamandala: Kodagu district is gearing up for the much-anticipated annual Cauvery Teerthodbhava, which will take place on October 17 at precisely 7:40 a.m. This sacred event, celebrated with great reverence, marks the moment when the river Cauvery springs forth from the Brahmakundike at Talacauvery, attracting thousands of devotees from across Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.
In preparation for the influx of devotees, the district administration, along with temple authorities, has made extensive arrangements to ensure the smooth conduct of the event. The Bhagandeshwara Temple has been leading various rituals since September 26, with additional ceremonies held on October 4 and 14. These rituals are part of the build-up to the Teerthodbhava, which holds significant spiritual importance for the region.
One of the key measures taken this year is the temple authorities’ focus on environmental conservation. A strict ban has been placed on the use of plastic at the event, urging devotees to refrain from carrying plastic containers for collecting the sacred water. Instead, eco-friendly alternatives have been recommended to ensure that the sanctity of the environment is preserved.
This year’s event is expected to draw an even larger crowd due to the timing of the Teerthodbhava, which is set to occur during the day. Unlike previous years when the event often took place late at night, the morning schedule is likely to attract many more pilgrims eager to witness the surge of water from the Brahmakundike.
To manage the expected surge in visitors, security has been heightened around Talacauvery. Kodagu Police have installed numerous CCTV cameras to monitor the crowds and maintain order. Additional facilities, such as drinking water stations and mobile toilets, have been set up, while medical teams, complete with ambulances, will be on standby to handle any emergencies that may arise during the event.
The Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) is also playing a key role in ensuring transportation for devotees. Additional buses will be operating from various parts of Kodagu, making it easier for pilgrims to reach Talacauvery, the revered source of the Cauvery river.
As a part of the traditional celebrations, Kodava men and women, dressed in customary attire, will take part in a Padayatra (pilgrimage on foot). Women, carrying Thaliyathakki Bolcha—a brass plate with rice and a traditional lamp—will walk barefoot from Bhagamandala to Talacauvery, singing hymns in praise of the Goddess Cauvery.
The pilgrimage begins at Sri Bhagandeshwara Swamy Temple in Bhagamandala, where devotees will gather before embarking on the journey to Talacauvery. This sacred walk is a reinstatement of a long-standing tradition that highlights the region's deep cultural connection to the Cauvery river.
With all preparations in place, Kodagu is ready to host the thousands of devotees who will come together to celebrate this auspicious event, honouring the river that sustains and nourishes the land.
