Madikeri: Amid rising concerns over illegal lottery sales and gambling activities in Kodagu, the district has reported 49 cases of illegal lottery sales and six cases involving matka (gambling) over the past year.
Additional Deputy Commissioner R. Aishwarya on Tuesday chaired a meeting aimed at eradicating these unlawful practices. During the quarterly meeting of the district-level flying squad, which was convened to address the enforcement of regulations against illegal lottery and gambling operations, Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) K.S. Sundarraj provided an update on enforcement efforts.
He revealed that between January 2023 and September 2024, the police registered 49 cases related to illegal lottery sales and six cases involving matka. Surveillance along Kodagu’s inter-state borders has been intensified to prevent such activities, officials said.
The ADC urged the public to actively report any illegal lottery or gambling activities in their areas. Reports can be submitted to the nearest police station or by calling the official helpline at 08272-228678.
Emphasising the importance of consistent enforcement, Aishwarya directed the flying squad committee to conduct regular inspections to identify and curb these illegal activities. She also called on officers from the Commercial Tax Department to remain vigilant during their routine inspections of shops to detect the sale of unauthorised lottery tickets.
