Gonikoppa: Jammada Preeth Appaiah, a resident of Gonikoppa in Kodagu district, achieved a remarkable feat by hoisting the Indian flag atop Mount Elbrus, the highest peak in Europe and Russia, on Independence Day, August 15.
Preeth successfully ascended the 5,642-meter summit, showcasing her exceptional mountaineering skills and patriotic spirit. This is not her first significant achievement in the world of mountaineering. In 2023, she scaled Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain peak in Africa, standing at 5,895 meters (19,340 feet).
Preeth Appaiah, currently resides in Bannimantap, Mysuru. Preeth said she completed the climb in 7 hours and 20 minutes, starting at midnight and reaching the peak at 7.20 am. She was part of 11-member expedition team.
Reflecting on her journey, Preeth detailed her expedition, which began with her departure from Mysuru on August 9 and arrival in Russia the following day. By August 11, she embarked on an acclimatization trek to a molybdenum-rich mountain, reaching an elevation of 4,120 meters (13,515 feet).
After this trek, she proceeded to Elbrus village and spent two additional days acclimatizing at Pastukhov Rocks. The critical ascent of Mount Elbrus commenced around midnight, culminating in her reaching the summit by 7:20 am on August 17.
Preeth is married to advocate Jammada M. Aiyanna has two sons, Pratham Poonacha and Aryan Kuttappa. She is the daughter of the late Captain Kunjiyanda Appaiah and Gowramma. Her brother, Kunjiyanda Machaiah (Machu), is a wildlife photographer.
