Melbourne: Rohan Bopanna, a 43-year-old from Kodagu, made history on January 27, Saturday, by becoming the oldest male player in the Open era to win a grand slam title. His achievement came as he and his partner, Matthew Ebden, triumphed in the Australian Open men's doubles tournament.
Bopanna from India and Ebden from Australia secured a commanding 7-6(0), 7-5 victory against Italians Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori. The duo showcased an impressive serving performance, not allowing their opponents a single break point throughout the match.
Afterwards, Bopanna expressed, 'Undoubtedly, the best moment in my career,' as reported by the official website of the Australian Open. 'I had contemplated quitting and giving up, but deciding to persist and find joy in what I was doing turned out to be the best advice I gave myself. For years, I've been striving to reach this point, and the obstacles were formidable.' he said.
This accomplishment makes Bopanna only the third Indian to achieve a men's doubles Grand Slam title. Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi stand as the iconic figures who have secured Major titles for India in men's tennis, with trailblazer Sania Mirza achieving the same feat in women's tennis.
