Bengaluru: Sinchal Kaveramma Theetharamada, an exceptional athlete from Nallur Village in Ponnampet, Kodagu, has been honoured with the prestigious Karnataka Olympics Award 2024 by the Chief Minister of Karnataka, Siddaramaiah on 1 December in Bengaluru.

Renowned for her remarkable achievements, Sinchal is the country’s top performer in the 400m hurdles, with a record time of 56.7 seconds. She has also clinched numerous medals in the triple jump, representing Karnataka at the Junior Nationals in Gujarat. Despite her impressive career, a hamstring injury at the event led to her first missed podium finish.

Currently ranked second nationally in hurdles, she trails Tamil Nadu’s Vithya Ramaraj. Her consistent performances have earned her a spot at the year-long Indian coaching camp in Trivandrum.

Sinchal is preparing to represent India in major international events, including the World Championships, Asian Track and Field Championships (Seniors), SAF Championships, and Federation Championships.

Her recognition with the Karnataka Olympics Award not only highlights her athletic prowess but also brings attention to Kodagu’s rich legacy of producing top-tier athletes. Sinchal’s dedication and discipline continue to inspire young athletes in the region, with many looking up to her as a role model.

Siddaramaiah urges Karnataka athletes to bring home Olympic gold:

Meanwhile, Siddaramaiah stated that he is always ready to provide the necessary facilities and support for the state’s athletes. "The state budget has consistently allocated funds for the development of sports. I urge someone from Karnataka to bring home an Olympic gold medal," he said.

He made these remarks while inaugurating the award ceremony organised by the Karnataka Olympic Association and distributing awards to athletes.

"We have reserved ₹6 crore for gold medal winners and ₹4 crore for silver medalists. However, no one has brought back a medal yet. I call upon athletes to bring home a gold medal for the country," he added.

Highlighting the purpose of the Karnataka Olympic Association, Siddaramaiah noted that the organisation has been awarding these prizes for 22 years to encourage participation at the state, national, and international levels.
