Madikeri: Kodagu district has experienced a notable increase in alcohol sales over the past nine months, according to data released by the excise department. From April to December 2024, alcohol sales rose by 7,206 boxes compared to the same period in 2023.
According to the TOI report, Figures reveal that 7,78,839 boxes of alcohol were sold in Kodagu during this period in 2024, marking an almost 1% growth from the 7,71,633 boxes sold in 2023.
Among the district’s three excise zones—Madikeri, Somwarpet, and Virajpet—Virajpet registered the highest sales. The zone recorded 3,15,108 boxes of alcohol sold in 2024, reflecting a 3.5% increase over the previous year.
The trend was particularly evident on New Year's Eve in 2024, with liquor and beer sales significantly surpassing the numbers from 2023. On December 31, 2024, 7,912 boxes of liquor and 4,126 boxes of beer were sold across the district. In comparison, New Year’s Eve in 2023 saw sales of 3,532 boxes of liquor and 2,282 boxes of beer, indicating a marked rise in festive consumption.
