Madikeri: Despite being one of the top tourist destinations in the country, Kodagu, also known as Coorg, has long lacked a dedicated tourism website. However, this is set to change as District Commissioner (DC) Venkat Raja announced on Monday, 30 September, that a comprehensive tourism website for the district will soon be launched.
The website will showcase Kodagu's famous temples, sacred sites, hotels, homestays, resorts, reservoirs, waterfalls, and other key attractions, according to Raja.
The announcement was made during the World Tourism Day programme, held at a city hotel and organised by the district administration, zilla panchayat, tourism department, and tourism partners.
Raja emphasised the need for the district to highlight its sacred sites like Talacauvery and Bhagamandala, alongside its waterfalls, hotels, and resorts. He confirmed that the website will be live by December, providing valuable information to tourists.
Raja also called for a concerted effort to promote cleanliness and environmental awareness among visitors, advocating for the development of eco-tourism across the district and discouraging the use of plastic.
Additionally, the DC suggested holding educational camps to guide tourists on proper conduct at holy and tourist sites.
Anitha Bhaskar, deputy director of the tourism department, shared that Kodagu sees about 4.7 million tourists annually, creating significant employment opportunities. She added that there are around 4,000 homestays in the district, with over 2,000 already registered online, and 53 hotels and resorts certified by the Karnataka tourism department.
BR Nagendra Prasad, president of the District Chamber of Commerce, pointed out that around 1 lakh visitors come to Kodagu on weekends, making environmental cleanliness a key concern. He urged local organisations to focus more on this issue, proposing the deployment of guards at important sites. Prasad further revealed that approximately 1.25 lakh people in Kodagu rely on tourism for their livelihood.
