Madikeri: In a testament to its enchanting landscapes and resilient tourism sector, the hilly district of Kodagu, popularly known as Coorg, has witnessed a surge in popularity, attracting a record-breaking 43 lakh tourists in the year 2023.
Data released by the Kodagu Tourism Department highlights a remarkable 38% increase in tourist arrivals in 2023 compared to the figures recorded in the preceding year, 2022. The statistics reveal that a staggering 43,69,507 tourists explored the picturesque district, surpassing the previous year's count of 27,29,711.
This surge marks a significant recovery for Kodagu, which faced challenges in the aftermath of the 2018 landslides and floods, followed by the disruptive impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. Despite these setbacks, the district has not only bounced back but has also witnessed substantial growth in tourism.
The journey to this remarkable milestone has seen fluctuations in tourist numbers over the past few years. In 2021, Kodagu attracted 10,15,490 visitors, followed by a slight dip in 2022 with 8,43,666 tourists. In the year 2020 the district saw only 8,43,666 tourists. The year 2019 witnessed a significant influx with 22,69,988 tourists making their way to the district.
Tourism authorities attribute this remarkable rebound to the scenic beauty, coffee plantations, and cultural richness of Kodagu continue to captivate travelers, establishing it as a must-visit destination in Karnataka.
Local businesses, including hospitality and tourism-related enterprises, are experiencing a boost in economic activity, reflecting the positive impact of the increased tourist footfall.
