Bengaluru: Cybercrime cases in Kodagu district have surged by an alarming 273% from 2020 to 2023, highlighting the growing vulnerability of the region to digital offenses. Data from the Karnataka government reveals a sharp rise in cases, from 46 in 2020 to a staggering 172 in 2023, underscoring the district’s challenges in managing its digital transition.
Trends and Numbers
The year-wise data accessed by The Kodagu Express stated that the cyber crime cases in Kodagu also known as Coorg rose by 34.8% in 2021, reaching 62. By 2022, the number climbed to 84, a 35% increase over the previous year.
The steepest rise was recorded in 2023, with a 105% spike, as cases more than doubled compared to 2022. While 2024 (up to November) has seen 84 cases, as per the data by Karnataka Home Department.
Case Outcomes
Despite the increase in reported cases, judicial outcomes remain a challenge. A significant number of cases are categorised as Pending Trial (PT), with convictions (CN) notably low. For instance, in 2023, only 1 case resulted in a conviction out of 172 registered cases, reflecting systemic bottlenecks in investigation and prosecution.
The growing prevalence of cybercrimes like fraud, identity theft, and harassment is tied to increasing digital adoption in Kodagu. As residents and businesses shift to online platforms, vulnerabilities to cyber threats have expanded.
