Madikeri: The Kodava community in Kodagu celebrated ‘Pathalodhi’ on Saturday, a traditional observance where families offer ‘Meedhi’ (oblation) to their ancestors. This ritual, marking the tenth day after the revered Cauvery Theerthodbhava at Talacauvery, holds immense cultural and spiritual importance.

The Codava National Council (CNC) commemorated the day in a unique way, holding rituals in Madikeri Fort and Naalnaad Palace. According to CNC President Nandineravanda U. Nachappa, ‘Pathalodhi’ is a vital tradition for Kodavas, as families come together to pay respects and offer blessings to their forebears. Nachappa noted, "It is very important to offer respects and Meedhi to our ancestors. Most Kodava families conduct this ritual after ten days of holy Theerthodbhava."

In earlier times, people would bring back ‘theertha’ (holy water) from Talacauvery in brass vessels and seek blessings from neighbours and elders, a practice symbolising community respect and unity. For new brides, ‘Pathalodhi’ also meant a visit to their parental homes to receive blessings. The observance marks a sacred period when auspicious ceremonies such as house warmings, ear piercings, and land preparations for new houses traditionally take place.

The CNC’s commemoration went beyond family offerings, reflecting on a tragic aspect of Kodava history. Nachappa explained that the rituals in Madikeri Fort and Naalnaad Palace served as a solemn remembrance of the Kodava patriarchs who suffered under oppressive rulers over two centuries ago.

“We remember our hapless patriarchs who were tragically killed by treacherous rulers in the Madikeri Fort premises continuously for more than two centuries under their barbaric regime,” Nachappa said, highlighting the CNC's dedication to preserving the memories of Kodava heritage and honouring the lives lost in these historical events.

The observance of ‘Pathalodhi’ is a powerful reminder of the Kodava community’s enduring respect for ancestral heritage and the collective memory of resilience in the face of historical struggles, serving to strengthen the cultural identity of Kodavas across Kodagu.
